What does it mean to be a flexitarian?

We can call flexitarians all people who lead a vegetarian life, but occasionally consume some foods of animal origin, such as milk and eggs.

In addition, a flexitarian person will always take into account the origin of the raw materials he/she consumes: sustainable fishing, consumes organic products of vegetable origin, buys eggs from hens not raised in cages, etc.

Being flexitarian is an ethical stance on the abuses committed by the food industry with animals and the environment, and at the same time recognize that our body needs to consume these foods for its proper functioning.

It is possible to summarize the principles of the flexitarian diet in these points:

– Eat mainly fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains.

– Consume more vegetable protein than animal protein

– Be flexible and incorporate meat and animal products from time to time.

– Eat less industrially processed foods

– Reduce sugar consumption

What is the difference between vegan and vegetarian diets?

Vegans do not incorporate any animal products into their diet or lifestyle and are not flexible in this respect, since from the vegan point of view, the use of animals to obtain any product is considered abusive.

Vegetarians do not consume meat, but they can use animal products for other purposes, such as footwear, accessories and clothing in general.

In addition, within vegetarians there are some further subdivisions such as lacto-vegetarians who consume dairy products or ovo-lacto-vegetarians who consume eggs and dairy products.

What are the benefits of being a flexitarian?

Human beings are omnivorous by nature, however, thanks to the development of industry and various changes in our lifestyle we can freely choose the type of food we want to eat.

In the western world we have huge amounts of food, which means that we can eat as much food as we want without any kind of control. And this, as you can imagine, is not positive at all.

The main benefits of a flexitarian diet are:

1. Improved health: consuming too much red meat can lead to cardiovascular problems and cause the body to swell. These types of health problems can be avoided by reducing the consumption of meat. Thanks to the fact that, being a flexitarian, you eat more vegetable products, the body gets healthier nutrients. All this guarantees better health.

a.            People who eat less meat, especially less red meat, control their blood pressure better.

b.            It helps to level blood glucose.

c.            Some researchers claim that this type of nutrition, by increasing the consumption of antioxidant foods, decreases the incidence of colon cancer.

2.            Helps the environment: if meat consumption is reduced, the environment benefits, since producing vegetables is more sustainable. On the other hand, to obtain animal products, too many resources are consumed and more pollution is generated.

3. It helps you maintain a healthy weight: thanks to this diet, your body will have less fat, which will help you with your figure.

4.            Better product quality: In the food industry meat is understood as a “product” and using that prism it is easy to understand that the higher the demand, the lower the quality of the product. On the other hand, if society as a whole reduces the demand for meat products, the quality of these products will increase notably.

At RealVegy we advocate responsible eating because this simple fact has multiple benefits for both you and the environment. So we encourage you to research and learn about the flexitarian diet and incorporate it into your lifestyle, because it’s good for you and good for the planet.
